Ferry to Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands lie 20km from Italy’s east coast in the Adriatic Sea, comprising San Domino, San Nicola and the uninhabited Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa.

‘Tremiti’ means ‘tremors’ in English, deriving from their renowned seismic activity. This has also characterised their landscape; jagged cliffs, sandy coves and sparkly grottoes etched onto the coastline. There are lush pine forests further inland too, making them some of the most picturesque islands in Italy.

San Domino boasts excellent hiking trails and is the most tourist-friendly. Follow the coastline walking track where you’ll come across dramatic caves and idyllic bays. Grotta del Bue Marino is 70 metres deep and well worth a visit, so be sure to book a guided boat tour.

On San Nicola, you’ll get a taste for the Tremiti’s medieval history, with historic white buildings spread along the cliffs and a Benedictine church featuring a fascinating 11th Century floor mosaic.

Capraia is named after the abundant wild caper plant found on the island. It is also ideal for bird watching and has a number of secluded grottoes.

Sailing to the Tremiti Islands couldn't be easier, with a number of crossings provided from the Gargano coast in Italy.

The port of Termoli offers the only route to San Domino and there are daily crossings from Vasto and Vieste to San Nicola.

The routes are operated by NLG and Tirrenia, who provide high-speed, comfortable ferries.
